Bay of Islands Walking Weekend
Thursday 12th or Saturday 14th
Walk 19 – Twin Coast Cycle Trail - Walk and Bike

Catch the passenger ferry from Russell to Paihia. From Paihia a van will take you to a section of the Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail (approx 30 min drive).

Walking first – through the Utakura Valley where you will have lunch at the picnic spot by the river. You will pass through pūriri and kāhikatea tree forests and follow meandering streams. If you are lucky you will find the native orchid in flower.

After lunch, you will be transported back to Okaihau so you can cycle the 14 km trail to Kaikohe. It is a scenic ride, passing through lovely farmland, Lake Ōmāpere and a tunnel. It’s a slight uphill to start with, then its level and downhill!

At Kaikohe your transport will await you, so you can be transported back to Paihia, where you will have the opportunity to explore Paihia and return to Russell on the passenger ferry in your own time.

These sections are a beautiful part of the Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail – one of New Zealand’s Great Rides.

It is important that you do know how to ride a bike and have ridden a bicycle in the last few years.

Notes:
1. Please check what is included and the time and length of your walk so you know what you need to bring in terms of food and water. It’s always a good idea to have a card or cash on you as you never know what you might encounter along the way.
2. The Russell Bowling Club is our Walking Weekend HQ, all walks start from there.

Our guides are all passionate and knowledgeable about the Bay of Islands area and bring something special to the walking experience. Each walk has no more than 20 people. Our HQ is the Russell Bowling Club where people can meet, chat about their day and have something to eat and drink.

Russell is a fantastic base for the weekend with lots of great restaurants, places to stay and for the non-walkers out there. We are very excited about this weekend and the great walking experiences there are here in the Bay of Islands. Time to get your walking boots out of the cupboard and join us in the Bay of Islands.

Visit our website to see all the walks you can do.
