--------------
Planting season is approaching and we have lots of plans this year. Our initial focus will be planting the downhill side of Moemoea track, which will take several sessions. In the open areas we will be planting tough trees that can handle the dry, windy conditions. Under the shelter of previous plantings and natural regeneration we will broaden the range of sub-canopy species.
We will be realigning the north end of Whakaturanga track to make it less muddy in winter and then plant the south-facing slope with a range of locally rare trees like kohekohe and kahikatea. And the historic reservoir will get a tidy up and more plants.
As established areas of forest canopy at Manawa Karioi get taller, we are focusing on increasing the biodiversity of the project by underplanting with species that have no local seed source. In particular this year we will put in a lot of kahikatea, kotukutuku, totara and matai. These will help create the 5-layered coastal forest that once covered the lower slopes of the hills around south Wellington.
