This June, to celebrate Matariki 2024 our Te Whanganui-a-Tara space will host events for everyone to enjoy. For some iwi Matariki heralds the Māori New Year. Historically, new year celebrations provided the opportunity for whānau to come together and acknowledge the year gone by, prepare for the year ahead with kai, kōrero, ceremony and entertainment. At Wellington Museum, our Te Whanganui a Tara space, will host a pōhutukawa star craft to commemorate loved ones, a special Matariki story telling session, and a kapa haka performance by local kura.
Join us in reflecting on this special time of the year with the Wellington community. Pōhutakawa star craft Drop-in for a pōhutukawa star craft and write a memory or a message to a loved one as we remember those who have passed this year. No booking required. Saturday 1 June – Monday 1 July | Open daily 10am – 5pm | Wellington Museum Matariki Storytelling with Moira Wairama Join Wellington Storyteller Moira Wairama as she performs a special storytelling session as part of Matariki. She will reveal some of the meaning and interpretation of Matariki and the actions that we can take at this very special time of the year. No booking required. Sunday 30 June | 11am – 12pm | Wellington Museum We welcome everyone at Te Waka Huia o Nga Taonga Tuku Iho. Matariki at the Museum is ideal for 5 – 12 year olds.  Donations appreciated.
