Hike your first section of Te Araroa Trail, or add to your section collection
Te Araroa Trail, The Long Pathway is a 3028km long hike connecting Cape Reinga with Bluff. The trail passes through the Manawatū, including the towns of Bulls, Feilding, Bunnythorpe and Palmerston North as well as 50km of back country hiking in the Tararua foothills.
This hike takes you on a 13 km long bush walk on a section of trail built specifically for Te Araroa by local Te Araroa Trust volunteers in 2005/06. Walking south from the hills behind Palmerston North the trail descends to the Tokomaru River valley before following the route built by Jim Burtton in the 1920s to access his remote farm. The Track eventually emerges onto Tokomaru Valley Rd, near the Mangahao No 3 Reservoir, inland from Shannon.
Participants choosing this hike should have a good level of fitness for the six to seven hour hike. Whilst mostly easy country, there are a few steep climbs, two wet-feet stream crossings, a lot of tree roots and there may be muddy sections of the trail. Participants should pack water, snacks and food for lunch. Suitable footwear as well as warm and waterproof clothing is essential.
Mini buses will transport participants to and from the start and finish of the walk.
Your fee includes a $10 donation to the local Te Araroa Manawatū Trust to support the work of volunteers who help to maintain the trail.
