Auckland Festival of Photography 2011

The 8th annual Auckland Festival of Photography rolls out across the Auckland region again in June (3-26), with over 100 photography exhibitions and events in a selected Signature and open-access Fringe programme. Amongst the highlights is the Brian Brake: Lens on the World exhibition at the Auckland Art Gallery from 1 June to 14 August, and the inaugural Auckland Festival of Photography Annual Fine Arts Commission exhibition at the Aotea Gallery (10-24 June), featuring the sublimely talented Roberta Thornley.

The Talking Culture series, starts with a Symposium on June 4 at the Aotea Centre focuses on the issue of Conflict represented by photography. This one-day event features speakers Veronique Cornille, John Miller and Australian photographer Tim Page and will raise critical debate around photography’s role in representing conflict, from civil unrest to war. The accompanying photographic projections running from 4 to 9 June feature confronting images from the Gaza strip by Magnum’s Paolo Pellegrin, photoessays curated by the Angkor Photo Festival and the surprising and refreshingly uplifting work of Jamal Penjweny in Iraq is Flying.

There is a rugby themed photo blog running throughout the month, a Nikon Auckland Photo Day, when for one day only, photographers are asked to take a photo which reflects their Auckland. The Nikon Auckland Photo Day competition on 11 June gives photographers just 24 hours to capture their city in a single photo. A day in the life of Auckland as seen by the people of Auckland. Get ready to shoot!
