246 Victoria St, Hamilton
Victoria on the River is an expansive amphitheatre-style park on Victoria St, in the heart of Hamilton’s central business district.
Offering fantastic views of the Waikato River and connections to the city’s popular river path network - popular with cyclists, walkers and runners - Victoria on the River (VOTR for short) formally opened on 25 January 2018.
VOTR is a major project as part of the Council's Central City Transformation Plan.
Hamilton City Council purchased the 4769p sqm site – previously occupied by the Waikato Times - in 2009, and committed the funding to VOTR in late 2015. Construction began in April 2017 after more than 6300 cubic metres of contaminated material was removed from the site.
More than 9000 plants give it a green and organic feel and blend with adjacent Waikato River natural landscapes.
The amphitheatre shape of the park means VOTR can be the venue for small acoustic performances -if you’re interested in performing at or booking the performance space, email cityevents@hcc.govt.nz.
Key stakeholders in the project were Edwards White Architects, AECOM New Zealand and Schick Civil Construction.
VOTR is a welcoming and attractive public open space for Hamilton residents and visitors to enjoy.
