Back to Romantic - Chamber Music Series

The final concert of 2019 Back in Time Chamber series. This concert will be showcasing the talented Anna Maksymova on piano along with Mark Menzies on violin with the Tres Cordes Trio. Chamber music will be featuring selections from the romantic period including Schumann’s Piano Quintet, a work considered one of Shumann’s finest compositions and one that revolutionized the instrumentation and musical character of the piano quintet.

Pianist Anna Maksymova is the winner of the Lewis Eady Charitable Trust Emerging Artist Series and a 3rd prize winner of Kerikeri International Piano Competition. She is a recipient of George Russell Music Scholarship, Ruby Hay Scholarship, Pettman Special Programme Scholarship, Leslie Atkinson Memorial Prize in Music and the Dame Malvina Major Scholarship. Since the completion of her Masters degree in Germany, where Anna studied with the renowned professor Lev Natochenny, Anna has returned to Christchurch to continue doing what she likes to do best of all – perform and teach. Since last year Anna has performed as a soloist with the CSO, and was involved in concerts at the Akaroa Summer School and Dame Malvina Major Foundation. She enjoys playing with other musicians and this year she has been collaborating with cellist Tomas Hurnik, clarinettist Mark Walton, soprano Anna Hoetjes and string trio Tres Cordes among others. Anna also enjoys teaching at her music studio at The Piano.

Violinist Mark Menzies is described in the Los Angeles Times as an ‘extraordinary musician’ and a ‘riveting violinist’, Mark Menzies’ career as a viola and violin virtuoso, chamber musician and pianist, conductor and advocate of contemporary music, has seen performances in Europe, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and across the United States.

Tres Cordes string trio has been performing together since 2007, and are all members of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra; Cathy Irons (violin), Sharon Baylis (viola) and Tomas Hurnik (cello). The trio has a passion for chamber music which they have shared with audiences around New Zealand as well as broadcasting live on CTV in 2009. In 2013 they toured for Chamber Music NZ, and their playing was described as “high spirited” and “fun overflowing,” “with splendid co-ordination and attack.” by the Rotorua Daily Post. They were invited to the Nelson Composers Workshop in 2011, to perform and work alongside young NZ composers. The trio commissioned and premiered Anthony Ritchie's Easter Melancholy alongside artist Nathanael Provis' stunning large oil landscape paintings for an opening exhibition. Members of the group have performed as a string quartet in Tokyo at the NZ Embassy and their first CD “String Trio Sapphires” was broadcast on Plains FM in 2012 and Radio New Zealand Concert as the competition CD of the week in 2011. In 2015, they recorded the music for The Art of Recovery for the New Zealand International Film Festival and performed for the opening of the Chinese Spring Festival. Tres Cordes performed at the 2017 XXXIX Festival Internacional de Musica de Deia in Marjorca, Spain.
