Chinese laundries first opened in the 1880s and were an integral part of New Zealand’s social fabric until at least the 1950s. Join historian Joanna Boileau for a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Chinese laundrymen and women. She will tell the story behind the rise and decline of Chinese laundries in New Zealand and some of the major laundries trading in Auckland.

Joanna’s book 'Starch Work by Experts' is published by the Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust ($49.95) and will be available for purchase (cash only) on the night.

Drinks and nibbles will be served from 6.15 pm. Koha appreciated. All proceeds to Parnell Heritage Inc.

RSVP: Email Parnell.Library@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz or call 377 0209 by 21 October.
