A festive culmination of an inspiring week of music-making and collaboration between New Zealand’s most promising young talent and the top tutors who give the International Akaroa Music Festival the renown and prestige it enjoys. Two charming sextets—a Baroque one by Rameau and a Romantic one by Dvořák—showcase the different specialist strengths of the staff and students; a fantasia on themes from one of the nineteenth century’s most beloved operas, Bellini’s Norma, is an escape into the world of Italian bel canto combined with impressive instrumental virtuosity; and the famous Belgian violinist Eugène-Auguste Ysaÿe’s exquisite violin showpiece ‘Les neiges d’antan’, a nostalgic reminiscence of ‘the snows of yesteryear’, is a perfect marriage of beauty and technical brilliance that provides a fitting close to a memorable concert and festival.
