In keeping with our theme – Dual History, Shared Future – this unique tour will be a wonderful opportunity to hear two sides of the same story through the voices of reputable local Māori and Pākehā historians. These include Dr Peter Meihana and Kiley Nepia, cultural advisor of Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō.
Enjoy a relaxing boat ride sailing through Tōtaranui (Queen Charlotte Sound) and taking in the beautiful and abundant flora, fauna and wildlife that were recognised and cherished by both Māori and European settlers centuries ago.
At Meretoto/Ship Cove you will hear the stories passed down by the descendants of the first iwi that settled in this region and gain some understanding of the reasons why the first encounters at Meretoto may have meant that Captain James Cook returned here five times, the only place he did this during his exploration of Aotearoa.
The tour will also take you to Motuara Island, which was significant for Māori and the place where Captain James Cook claimed sovereignty over the South Island. Motuara was also where Cook and his crew established productive gardens. It is now predator free and used as a crèche for rowi kiwi, which are unique to the south Okarito forest near Franz Josef.
