'Passengers' featuring performances by Amy Jean Barnett, Antonia Barnett-McIntosh, Lucien Johnson, Rob Thorne, Thomas Voyce. Event coordinated by Thomas Voyce and Dugal McKinnon.
As our final event for Passages, Adam Art Gallery’s current exhibition, five artists perform new sonic works and improvisations in response to the exhibition and the dynamics of the acoustic spaces housing it. Passengers is the second of two collaborations between the Gallery and New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī, Victoria University of Wellington and follows the first highly successful event, 'passages, a response', as a special closing-week event.
Amy Jean Barnett, Lucien Johnson, Antonia Barnett-McIntosh, Rob Thorne and Thomas Voyce incorporate electronic and acoustic sound—taonga pūoro, text, field recordings, saxophone and electronic diffusion—to enliven the galleries with physical and aural movement.
As in the first sonic programme, Philipsz’, Fowler’s, and Hecker’s works will be suspended during the performance. But unlike the earlier event, which sought to echo the time-based sequence of the exhibition through multi-channel compositions experienced one by one across the building, Passengers responds by actively blurring each performer’s work.
Throughout the evening the musicians will regularly perform simultaneously, embracing overlaps between their compositions and initiating conversations with each other in a way that invites audiences to move between one performance and the next.
Please note that the Gallery will close at 2pm on 13 April to allow for the performers to set up. Refreshments will be served during the evening.
This is the final event for the exhibition Passages: Luke Fowler, Florian Hecker, Susan Philipsz, closing 21 April. The gallery will be closed Easter Friday but open 11am-5pm Saturday 20 April and Sunday 21 April.
All welcome, free entry.
