Sydney-based bassist returns home!

Up-until-quite-recently based in Sydney double bassist Tom Botting returns to his old musical stomping ground CJC with a quintet of Auckland’s finest musicians and humans. The tunes were composed in both New Zealand and Australia over the last few years, born from a longing for the people and places of Aotearoa and the quintessential expat’s struggle with self-identity and the idea of ‘home’. Tom is excited to bring the music home to where the journey began for him and perform the tunes in the land that inspired them.

Tom will be ably assisted by the remarkable talents of Callum Passells on sax, Michael Howell on guitar, Kevin Field on piano and Steve Thomas on drums. Tom cut a good percentage of his teeth in the house band for the CJC jam session most weeks before moving to Sydney and can’t wait to get back and see some familiar faces as well as hanging and yarning with the new guard. Expect a night of cinematic jazz odysseys, searching improvisation and group interaction. Soaring melodies, uplifting harmony and a maelstrom of rhythm; should be a cracker!

Tom Botting is a double bassist and composer from New Zealand. After relocating from Auckland to Sydney in late 2011, Tom quickly forged a path into the Australian jazz scene. His impressive abilities as a sideman and bassist have led to playing opportunities with jazz luminaries as diverse as Roger Manins, Dale Barlow, James Muller, Walter Smith III, Vince Jones, and The Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra. Tom placed third at Australia’s prestigious National Jazz Awards held as part of the 2015 Wangaratta Jazz Festival and recently completed a PhD at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Recent highlights include a tour to South Korea with Wellington-based 8 piece ensemble The Jac, recording and releasing albums with The Earshift Orchestra and metal-jazz group Scoredatura, touring with trans-tasman collaborative band Antipodes, presenting his own music at the 2019 Wellington Jazz Festival, composing new music for large ensemble as part of Wellington’s Arthur Street Loft Orchestra series, and releasing a solo double bass album in March 2020.
