Chris Dann is very well known to Manawatu jazz audiences as a versatile and entertaining pianist of national standing who is prepared to cross the boundaries of musical styles. He has appeared a number of times in the Te Manawa and Globe series with different performers including the Trio Bella ensemble. Chris was introduced to jazz music through attending a workshop by the Jamey Aebersold clinic which came to New Zealand in 1979. He studied classical music with Bruce Greenfield at the Wellington Polytechnic in the 1980s. When attending the Wellington Polytechnic music course in 1981 he was introduced to playing with a big band with Bud Jones. Chris enjoys working with different styles of music and the associated varying groups.

When Chris last played at the Globe as part of the Sunday Matinee series in 2019 the series organizer Guy Donaldson described it as one of the most astonishing concerts he had had the privilege of attending. In that concert, Chris was joined at a second piano by fellow pianist Nick Van Dyke. Together they improvised through the concert on a mix of classical tunes and jazz tunes, mostly well known. The result was a display of ensemble virtuosity and musicianship at an international level which electrified the substantial audience.

On Sunday August 29 Chris Dann returns to the Globe stage, this time joined by Nicky Wuts, one of New Zealand’s finest jazz vibraphonists who also happens to hail from Palmerston North. The format will otherwise be similar – a concert described by Chris as Classical Tunes plus Tangents - with the two performers improvising together on familiar melodies.

Admission is by donation, recommended from $5.
