John Saker, Kenny McFadden and Frank Mulvihill were key players in the 1980s-1990s basketball scene in Wellington. Join us at Wellington Museum to hear the sport icons discuss the glory days of when Wellington ‘got game’.
John Saker was an active player in Pōneke when the Exchequer Saints (mid-1980s) and the Hutt Valley Lakers (early 1990s) dominated the NZ Basketball League. At the time, the sport was just starting to get a foothold in Aotearoa. Basketball is now the most popular sport amongst young people in New Zealand.
Kenny McFadden first came to New Zealand in 1982 as a US basketball import for the Exchequer Saints. He is pivotal in changing and developing the game in New Zealand in the 1980s. He was Steven Adams’ mentor, through to joining the US NBA.
Frank Mulvihill played with the Exchequer Saints during those times alongside John Saker and Kenny Mcfadden. An ex Tall Black, Frank ran the Exchequer Footlocker Sports store in Wellington in the 1990s and is the founder of basketball clothing label Triple Threat.
