This workshop conducted by jazz pianist and composer Ben Fernandez will focus on techniques and elements of improvisation and creativity in music. This will certainly benefit those who want to explore making music beyond the written score. This workshop is open to all ages and players of all instruments. The only requirement is the willingness to learn, explore and share this lifelong journey of discovery with the world.
'Over the past few years, I have been approached by many musicians and teachers who want to learn to ‘improvise’. Most had tried learning from the various ‘How to play jazz/ improvise...’ books, videos, apps and other materials available today but had not been very successful. Today the subject of improvisation is very vast and covers a myriad of styles, techniques and many people give up before even getting started.
In this workshop I will demonstrate techniques used to improvise with focus on the 5 major aspects Melody, Rhythm, harmony, Form and Colour.
I have conducted many workshops in the past in New Zealand and overseas. I now intend having these for my local community. I know everyone is capable of improvisation – if they want to. This workshop will give them an insight into the tools needed to get started on their journey of discovery'. - Ben

Ben Fernandez MMus, BSc, DCS, PGDMM
Ben Fernandez is a classically trained jazz pianist, composer and arranger. He has a Masters Degree in Music majoring in Jazz performance from the University of Auckland. He also has degrees in Physics, Computer Science and Business Management. Ben gave up a successful career in Marketing and Advertising to make music a full time career choice. Ben has performed at concerts and events in over 25 countries and is an award-winning composer for jingles, TV shows and movies. Ben is currently composing music for a new musical that is due to be staged early next year. He is also the pianist on call for events and functions hosted by the Governor General of New Zealand. He has released 8 Albums of his music here in NZ and his music is available on iTunes, Spotify, Youtube etc. Ben is also an educator and teaches music at Pinehurst School, Rangitoto College, Rosmini College, Stella Maris School and St Mary's School.
