String quintets played by the Aroha String Quartet and the double-bassist Oleksandr Gunchenko (Sasha), who was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and in 1999, Sasha immigrated to New Zealand and joined the Christchurch Symphony as Associate Principal Double Bass. He completed a Bachelor of Music degree (first class honours) at the University of Canterbury, studying with Dale Gold and Edith Salzmann. He also served as Principal Double Bass in the National Youth Orchestra. Sasha joined the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in 2007.
The Aroha String Quartet usually comprises Haihong Liu (a first violinist in the NZSO), Konstanze Artmann (the NZSO’s Principal Second Violin), and the violist Zhongxian Jin, together with the cellist Robert Ibell. Unfortunately, Robert is currently unable to tour, so the cellist for this concert is Brenton Veitch, the Principal Cello with Orchestra Wellington and a casual player with the NZSO. He is a former member of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.
