Seaweek 2017

Seaweek is New Zealand’s annual national week about the sea. Herein arises different concerns and hosted by the NZ Association for Environmental Education (NZAEE), Seaweek focuses on learning from the sea. It’s about exciting and inspiring all New Zealanders to renew their connections with the sea! Not just for children or those involved with formal education – it’s a time for all of us to get to know our ocean, its habitats, characteristics and inhabitants better.

Seaweek is an opportunity to learn about and celebrate our connection with the ocean every year. It is also the best way to create awareness of what has been one of the greatest natural treasures of New Zealand. These events catch the attention of many and it's an open invitation for people to come and participate. Given the ample knowledge about the present issues of the ocean life, further projects relevant to Seaweek will be feasible. It can also help makes these annual events grow year by year.

Seaweek comprises a wide range of events, activities, opportunities, competitions and calls to action. Learn how a marae and local residents work together to protect a large harbour in Spend A Day in Heaven. Waikawa Dive Centre are hosting fun snorkelling lessons followed by a snorkel scavenger hunt on the Picton foreshore whilst the University of Canterbury will share some of their insights on whitebait, the Japanese kelp Undaria pinnatifida, and a truly unique seaweed species, Notheia anomala. Also, get a group together and join in the Big Beach Clean, a community clean-up of Tasman Bay beaches and other coastal areas between Tonga Island and Cable Bay.
