The South Island's largest Maori cultural centre is based at Nga Hau e Wha National Marae.
Daily tours for school groups and other visitors offer first-hand experience of the traditional customs and practices of Maori culture through powhiri, song, dance, and haka. Experienced guides, employed from local iwi, explain the culture, customs, history and tradition represented by the marae. View the beauty and skill required in the construction of a Maori meeting house (whare) and then taste a traditional Maori hangi (food cooked in the ground).
